Names Applied to God and to Jesus

Biblical proof of the divinity of Jesus Christ

Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Jehovah or Yahve is the special name God gave himself in the Old Testament. The name that was revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14  .. I Am That I Am..

God Blessed

Romans 9:5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

Here, “promises” in the text refer to the messianic promises.
Genesis 3:15 – First prophecy announcing the final victory of the “seed of the woman” (the Messiah) over the serpent (Satan).
Genesis 12:3 & 22:18 – The Promise to Abraham: God promises that all nations will be blessed through Abraham’s offspring, fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Patriarchs: The ancestors of the Jewish people such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc.
The Jews are descendants of the tribe of Judah.

Jesus is explicitly called God. He is the one who came in the flesh. Paul directly affirms the divinity of Christ, who is identified as sovereign and divine.

True God

1 John 5:20–21 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

The apostle John wanted to strengthen the faith of believers by combating false doctrines and emphasizing the true knowledge of God. There were many false gods in society.

The divinity of Jesus Christ is the most attacked doctrine in the world because Jesus is the central figure.

Everlasting Father

Isaiah 9:5 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The prophet Isaiah speaks at a time of crisis in Israel, with political and military threats and instability in the kingdom. The prophet announces the coming of Jesus Christ, the ideal King, bearer of peace and justice.
This is a prophecy of the birth of the Messiah.

The Lord of Glory

1 Corinthians 2:8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

This passage presents both humiliation and exaltation.

The apostle Paul speaks here of the wisdom of God, which is hidden from human eyes but revealed only by the Spirit.
He emphasizes that the Roman and Jewish authorities did not understand God’s plan. Through their spiritual ignorance and inability to recognize the divine plan, they missed the truth. The cross reveals the hidden wisdom of God.

The Author of Eternal Salvation

Hebrews 5:9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

The text expresses glorification. Jesus, being the perfect sacrifice, became the author of eternal salvation. He is presented as the perfect high priest, the one who understands human suffering, intercedes for humanity, and grants eternal life.

The Exact Representation of God’s Nature

Hebrews 1:3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

The purpose of the text is to show the superiority of Jesus Christ. It presents Jesus as the visible manifestation of God.

Two works in the text:

1-The purification of sins
2-Intercession in the heavenly tabernacle

Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father. See John 14:9:
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”

Reflection

Philippians 2:8–10

“And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,”

The cross is a voluntary act that Jesus accepted to save humanity. He humbled Himself willingly, and God sovereignly exalted Him. One day, every being will acknowledge His authority.
