Biblical proof of the divinity of Jesus Christ
Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
God is separate from creation. He is not a creature nor an evolution. He existed long before creation because it is He who created everything.
The Supremacy of Jesus
Hebrews 1:4–14 – The author distinguished Jesus from the angels. He presents Him as superior to the angels.
Throne = Symbol of dignity and dominion.
Hebrews 3:1–6 – The author distinguished Jesus from men. He presents Him as superior to men and his priesthood is superior to that of Leviticus.
God alone is worthy to be worshiped
Matthew 4:9–10
Satan’s second attempt at temptation. The first was in the Garden of Eden when he tempted Eve.
Theos: Greek name used to translate “God” in the New Testament.
Elohim: Hebrew name used to translate “God” in the Old Testament.
Five biblical arguments
1. God’s supremacy over angels and men
Hebrews 1:8 – But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Psalm 45:7 – Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
2. God and Savior Jesus Christ are in apposition
2 Peter 1:1 – Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
In the text, “Savior Jesus Christ” is an explanatory equivalent.
Titus 2:13 – Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
3. Thomas confesses the divinity and sovereignty of Jesus
John 20:27–29 – Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Thomas used the title that expressed his confession, namely the divinity and sovereignty of Jesus. And Jesus did not rebuke him because his act was not blasphemy.
4. God made Jesus Christ both Lord and Christ
Acts 2:36 – Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
To better understand, return to verses 29–35 where Peter speaks about Jesus in comparison with David and the promises God had made to him.
5. Jesus is God
Isaiah 7:14 – Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
God has four ways of creating man:
I. Creation (Ex. Adam)
II. Formation (Ex. Eve)
III. Reproduction (Procreation)
IV. Miraculous conception (Ex. Mary)
Matthew 1:23 – Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Luke 1:35 – And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
